Our previous belief in the honesty and integrity of our elected officials has been all but discounted by the past 10 years of vote tampering, infidelity, misdeeds while in and out of office to the point where we do not have a good feeling about any of them. The constant fact is that we voters so desperately want to believe in them that we vote them in again and again even when their words are not true and honest. The existing political system relies heavily on who can make the most credible ( even if untrue) case against the opponent. When these allegations or slurs are proven to be false , it is already too late and the public has had decided and the decision is often tied in to our innate or learned prejudices. When if ever will the voting public begin to look beyond the relative comfort zone that is their own perception and vote for people who hopefully mirror their views but be ready to oust them if they are not measuring up?
