In the 1950’s there was a TV show called “Racket Squad”.This show highlighted the various scams that were occurring and had occurred but never went away but were reinvented by the bunko artists using them. At the end of the show the main character (a fictional police Captain named Captain Braddock) stated this warning:” Remember there are people who will slap you on the back with one hand and pick your pocket with the other” This memory came to me when I read the small blurb regarding the “super committee” who is charged with ways to cut the deficits and balance the budget. This group of “ploticians” composed of “Scamocrats” and “Dupublicans” are the very same people who have no worries when it comes to retirement benefits as they and their predecessors have enacted laws that give them benefits the voters would love to have and are currently protesting and marching for across the country. This super committee is poised to propose cuts in Social Security benefits and not raising taxes where they should be raised. This is not to say that small business should have to shoulder any more burden than they do now but if our illustrious Congressmen were really in this for our benefit then we would not be where we are now and the political system would not be a failure. Remember That Congress has been in place through several Presidents so the fault is laid directly at their door. This is a classic example of “slapping us on the back and picking our pockets”.

I want to believe in the President of the United states,I want to believe in the Congress of the United States, I want to believe that we as a country have progressed beyond the inequities of race, gender. religion and sexual preferences. I would especially like to believe that such things as a newspaper’s motto is what they really believe. Notably a nationally known newspaper whose slogan is : “all the news that’s fit to print” Why is it that so many newspapers print only what relates to or falls in line with the publisher or senior editor’s beliefs. We have fallen out of favor with the truth as it should be. The art of true American Statesmanship is seemingly gone forever. The current legislature has allowed outsourcing of our jobs, (and we cannot afford what products are imported), we have allowed minor dictators to hold us hostage and we spend billions defending countries who have for years plodded along in the same manner and with all of the monetary and material support supplied have not moved into the 20th century except for the high-profile leaders. I want to believe that there is a light at the end of the tunnel but what I see is the need for another set of flash light batteries to keep looking. This country has the capability of resolving the conflicts we are involved in a very simple way “Do what’s needed or suffer the consequences”. We are held hostage by subversive groups who use their own people as shields and continue their lawless ways. We have N. Korea who is itching for a fight they cannot win while the population suffers, we have Iran , a rogue country who in the name of the almighty trains terrorists along with other nearby countries who hide their true nature with the air of civility and affluence while the majority of the populace lives in dire poverty. I want to believe our leaders are capable of resolving these issues;but they have become so self involved that getting elected is the main force that pushes them. I want to believe in the “new” legislators but sadly they have been blended into the fold much like an egg in batter.I now believe that until the voters understand that our National and local leaders have subverted our free system, we will continue to suffer in our self-imposed silence.

As children we are always made aware of the consequences of our actions, somehow that knowledge has been lost in the arena of politics. The initial run for office is very high-minded and seemingly above-board but that quickly turns into dishonesty on any one of several levels. This not to say that this is always the case but again on some level a person’s greed and ego become a factor. These human failures are what cause the eventual breakdown of the walls of dignity and sense of propriety, once these walls are down the ability to act judicially and prudently are just words on a yard sign or billboard. The onslaught of greed is not far behind once that first taste of deal making in the name of the people occurs. What are the consequences?, apparently not much as we voters carp about the work or lack of work done by our elected officials then we re-elect them.

The political system is not broken, just the politicians! In Illinois the legislature has raised the taxes by an estimated 66% to overcome deficits that has been growing for years and just now are being addressed. This increase is touted as being temporary but we all know that temporary taxes do not exist. In Wisconsin the governor has suspended Union bargaining. The elected officials have made an effort to alienate the voters by ineffective action, poor judgement and sometimes outright theft. Apparently gaining an office through the election process brings out the worst in some people, while others strive to live up to their obligations. Currently in all sections of government from Local to national we have a cadre of “neer do wells” who from the first day in office appear to be going down a path of “government by greenbacks”. It is certainly understandable that networking needs to be done to gain support in getting proper legislation passed but to covertly court or accept payments or “donations” that do not assist in proper legislation is as wrong as robbery. This 2 party system has the voters locked into a hole that deepens daily by the unreasonable actions of our local and national legislators. These officials apparently find it difficult to do the job of representing their constituents for fear of alienating their biggest donors. The recognizable future outcome of modern politics is being played out across the country by bands of voters who have had enough. Each voter recognizes that taxes are what keeps the Government running however the proper use of those tax dollars are the issues underlying these national demonstrations. The oil and water version of our system seems to be “honest” and “politician”.
