Reading  today’s local paper, I was considering the various opinions by the writers. The opinions seem to be cross-section of  the country in microcosm. The writers expressed hope, despair and  some  misinformation. We all have expressed the same emotions, feelings or what ever tag we feel most comfortable using. The real issue is that we have failed ourselves whether we are of voting age or not we have all come to believe the Government has the solutions to our problems. WE are the government by virtue of our electing representatives and therefore we need to provide these solutions. It does not take a group to do this although a group can garner more attention, it is the individual vote that makes the difference. First we must understand that all political aspirants can (and do) make claims and assure us that they can affect positive change in Government. The reality is until that person is in the office all promises are just promises, once in the seat the realities of the job emerge like vengeful spirits and from all sides. This has been the case for all of the years we have had elections and at all levels. Each person once elected finds their promises  become compromises that work sometimes. The “honeymoon period” after election is just a lull before the storm and the storm continues until the last day of service. There is not one political aspirant who has been elected that can honestly tell you the job is what they thought it would be. No one person can change years of  institutionalized business as usual but voters can, this change will take time since it involves removing the entrenched seat fillers a few at a time until we have more new than old. Our election process has morphed into a popularity contest with no best winner.
