As I was wandering through the daily news on line , I ran across a comment on fortune cookies and found a good article on the fortune cookie (I personally think they taste like I believe school glue would taste). An interesting story with some other sidelights.

The History of the Fortune Cookie

Born in California, of Chinese American—or maybe Japanese American—origin

by Borgna Brnner

Like chop suey, fortune cookies are an American invention. They originated in California, but who the actual inventor was, and which city in California is the true home of the fortune cookie, has continued to be a matter of debate. Unequivocally not Chinese, the fortune cookie may in fact not even be Chinese American.

Chinese or Japanese, Angelino or San Franciscan?

One history of the fortune cookie claims that David Jung, a Chinese immigrant living in Los Angeles and founder of the Hong Kong Noodle Company, invented the cookie in 1918. Concerned about the poor he saw wandering near his shop, he created the cookie and passed them out free on the streets. Each cookie contained a strip of paper with an inspirational Bible scripture on it, written for Jung by a Presbyterian minister.

Another history claims that the fortune cookie was invented in San Francisco by a Japanese immigrant named Makoto Hagiwara. Hagiwara was a gardener who designed the famous Japanese Tea Garden in Golden Gate Park. An anti-Japanese mayor fired him from his job around the turn of the century, but later a new mayor reinstated him. Grateful to those who had stood by him during his period of hardship, Hagiwara created a cookie in 1914 that included a thank you note inside. He passed them out at the Japanese Tea Garden, and began serving them there regularly. In 1915, they were displayed at the Panama-Pacific Exhibition, San Francisco’s world fair.

Judicial Activism

In 1983, San Francisco’s pseudo-legal Court of Historical Review held a mock trial to determine the origins of the fortune cookie. (In the past, the Court had ruled on such pressing topics as the veracity of Mark Twain’s quote, “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in San Francisco” and the origins of the Martini. *) To no one’s surprise, the judge (a real-life federal judge from San Francisco) ruled in favor of San Francisco. Included among the evidence was a fortune cookie whose message read: “S.F. Judge who rules for L.A. Not Very Smart Cookie.” Equally unsurprising, Los Angeles has denounced the ruling.

From Confucius to Smiley Faces

Fortune cookies became common in Chinese restaurants after World War II. Desserts were not traditionally part of Chinese cuisine, and the cookies thus offered Americans something familiar with an exotic flair.

Although there have been a few cases reported of individuals actually liking the texture and flavor of fortune cookies, most consider the fortune to be the essence of the cookie. Early fortunes featured Biblical sayings, or aphorisms from Confucius, Aesop, or Ben Franklin. Later, fortunes included recommended lottery numbers, smiley faces, jokes, and sage, if hackneyed, advice. Politicians have used them in campaigns, and fortunes have been customized for weddings and birthday parties. Today messages are variously cryptic, nonsensical, feel-good, hectoring, bland, or mystifying.

From Chopsticks to High Tech

Fortune cookies were originally made by hand using chopsticks. In 1964, Edward Louie of San Francisco’s Lotus Fortune Cookie Company, automated the process by creating a machine that folds the dough and slips in the fortune. Today, the world’s largest fortune cookie manufacturer, Wonton Food Inc. of Long Island City, Queens ships out 60 million cookies a month.

*After being served a Martini on the bench, the judge enthusiastically ruled that San Francisco was the home of the famous cocktail. The city of Martinez, California, appealed the ruling.

A recent radio show had the Affordable Care Act and Russia as topics and asked listeners to call in or post views on line. Having waited on line to do  the phone portion several times before I decided to blog it instead. My opinion: We have a neer do well Congress that has been no more than politicians trying to stay in office by any means necessary. This was evidenced in the past two (2)  major elections. Let’s understand that unfortunately these elections have been more about Race than many of  us want to believe but the truth is there. Tacit, overt and covert Racism is still present in these modern times and it covers ALL races that are considered  “lesser” by those who espouse  the “White” standard . This is not to say that great strides have not been made but merely showing that our So called leaders are not above using it for their own gains. The ACA which is labeled “Obamacare” for political reasons has left many people out of the insurance loop due to the “nickname” and ignorance coupled with sometimes innate prejudices. If our “Congress” were really in office to make good government then the ACA would  have arrived with  many problems solved and the rollout a lot smoother. What we have is 535 little children all wanting their way no matter who gets hurt in the process then publicly blaming the “Black” guy. This Congress has put the country in jeopardy health wise and now politically on the world stage. There has been little support where it should be and when things go south , they point at the White House. The politics of the U.S. has become no more than name calling contests with no substance while seeking approval (votes) from the populace.

As citizens we look to the government to protect and serve not deceive and mislead. Aside from the racial aspect we have not been served and been lead to believe that we are well represented. If one were to take a long look at the individual chambers , you will find them as dysfunctional as any family found on day time TV, the difference is TV shows are entertainment and do not affect the health of a Nation. It is important to note that in spite of any personal beliefs , previous Lawmakers at least made an effort to do the jobs they were elected to do- many of them are now considered “Statesmen”. During world war II, there was the phrase “Loose lips sink ships” but our current batch of lawmakers have ignored that message. It is important that the 535 stop making comments on air about critical issues especially when it involves national security and broadsiding every comment made by the CIC is the same as sinking ships. The only cure is for the Citizen’s to stop taking all of the information presented on air and from the 535 as fact, the prime reason for these blurbs is media coverage and viewers, if we stop viewing and or write letting them know we have had enough then perhaps we will get real change in Government.

A recent TV ad for Pizza Hut touted their wings with or without bones, I had to go back several times to understand the fast moving blurb that bone in wings are a dollar more per order. So my conclusion is that you are paying for “bones”. Many deboned meats carry a premium price due to the de boning but to pay to have the bones left in is a new thing. What next? How about paying for the takeout package as an extra charge?

Nick Cannon, the comedian entrepreneur is donning white face for his new act. After reading the comments I realized that many of us are  Racist and under or uninformed. For many years Black folks were minstrels and then white folks took that over as their own while making fun at Black folks as they hung from trees. It is ironic that some comments on his website were negative instead of viewing the article as entertainment information. I guess we still have a long way to go as far as Race in this country and much of the known world. Europe in some respects has ben well ahead of the U.S. but still has it virulent pockets of Racism. I believe when we all take a step back and look back, we will realize that the only real differences among us all is primarily skin color and all other differences are the normal ones that occur regionally.

Recently and much earlier, I noticed that some people have taken Facebook as a tell all for their lives rather than  social media for reasonable contact and expression. Is it reasonable for a person to post their most personal thought and feeling on social media when it involves their jobs and close relations? While most rational people would only disclose some of these thoughts to close friends and relatives, some post EVERYTHING!  Facebook has created a group of people who have what was previously known as “phone Cojones”. This is a state where people while on a call with someone is emboldened by the non face to face contact. This same type of empowerment exists on Facebook and in the comment section of many blogs. It creates a group of  folks who make nasty and inappropriate comments up to and including Racial insults.   It is unfortunate that the advent of social media has brought out the worst in some of us along with the best in most. For those without the ability to be civil and rational, I would suggest a perusal of a dictionary  and a book of etiquette before posting comments , opinions and rebuttals on social media. Bear in mind Facebook et al are all SOCIAL MEDIA!, by being social media everything you post is in the public and your family, friends and employers can and often see your postings. This will probably not be read by anyone who has posted such content but for the rest of us, remember they walk among us.

We are bombarded by ads and buzzwords for and against candidates running for office yet we continually overlook the fact that millions are spent to get our attention and votes. If it takes millions to get these votes and attention how much will it take to correct the problems that currently exist? We are already saddled with ineffective lawmakers who we have elected time after time based on the amount of air time they get and we have paid for  one way or another. We have openly supported the idea of term limits but fail to push the issue by voting for newcomers instead of the firmly entrenched seat fillers. This is not to say that all long termers and newcomers are bad or good but as voters and taxpayers we need to send the message that we want better government. Voting is the way to do it. We will make mistakes but we will have the opportunity to correct it in the next election. One the first things to do is eliminate the declaration of party in the primary, this will eliminate the party’s ability to identify potential votes. Our votes are supposed to be anonymous but this declaration limits our ability to vote across party lines and thereby negates that anonymity. I realize it is hard to have all voters on the same page on all issues but voting privacy is important to begin the process of “upgrading” our representation. A letter cost 50 cents, email 0 cents and a phone (what ever it costs), these forms of communication are the means to get better government. If we really want better government then we need to demand it!

I wish I could clarify the art of politispeak and pre election promises for the millions of us who are stuck in the rut of really believing the promises and political speeches (pre and post-election) made by the numerous candidates for offices. There are many of the Fox news followers group who believe all that’s reported and said by the Fox news group just because they say it on the air. This is not to say that FOX and other well known news stations are reporting incorrect information in total but it is incumbent on all adherents to Foxocracy to think in terms of who is the biggest supporter of FOX (monetarily) and who takes the ball when Fox puts it in to play for what appears to be a touchdown run? We have become a nation of complainers rather than doers and readers. The bare facts are always obscured by what sounds correct and true but with the correct placement of words is a lie or distortion of truth. Facts: We have had basically the SAME Congress through the several Presidents and no matter what is reported, these are the folks who propose and enact laws. This responsibility is great but is taken lightly by the 535  people we have elected (some for several terms). The Congress was never designed to be a fulltime job but modern office holders have made it so along with enacted laws that allow them to receive a pension after One (1) term, receive a COLA (cost of living adjustment) annually and a very nice health plan for their families and themselves. We have allowed ourselves to be pointed in the direction of the CIC (commander-in-chief) as the reason for problems and lack of solutions but keep in mind that many issues are resolvable by Congress with or without the President. The controversial Affordable Health Care Act is certainly not running as well as it should but had the Congress read the Act before it was passed with a one sided majority, the rollout would have been better and the Act would have been greatly improved. Some issues would not have changed due to the basic policies being better that the ones some folks already had. Congress has quietly joined  the ACA despite its flaws but there has been no widespread coverage on that. The idea that this act was pushed through by the majority party has started a firestorm that affects us all and our elected representatives have  labeled the ACT “Obamacare” as a derogatory name and many are vowing to overturn it or get rid of it but offering no alternative to the folks who are benefitting from the existing law. I have only this to say: dismiss half of what you see and hear, then read more. Remember a politicians primary goal is to get elected ,   stay in office on our dime and do as little as possible to get it.

I was watching a commercial about the new spectacular film on Noah’s Ark. Aside from the pairs of animals and obviously Noah’s family- I question the propagation of humans since the only humans were Noah’s family. It appears that this is a precedent in incest i.e. Noah is the Adam of modern day humans- or is the great flood fiction or not as world sweeping as we have been lead to believe?

Update:3/14/2014-Noah’s sons had wives so my thoughts of incest were wrong-what a relief!

Reading this column I thought about previous Congressional fights with the Commander In Chief over the years and what I was able to find in archived writings. It is clear to me that our Congress has been inept for years at a time and when not it was usually during Wartime. The “seat fillers” Dupublicans and Scamocrats alike have been at fault in raising the political bar as far as acid attacks on their opponents while hiding their own imperfections and missteps. These folks all entered office as champions of the people of their respective States yet once seated they proceeded to do less than they said they would even after first attempts at doing what they promised. Now according to this article they  (Congress) wants to press an issue that they previously could not (or wouldn’t) do anything about. I am hoping this is not about Race but unfortunately previous actions with this President in comparison to Previous White House residents indicates it very well could be.

Can House Republicans make Obama enforce laws?

House Republicans say President Obama has been derelict in enforcing key laws and are looking pass bills to hold him accountable. But the issue hardly began with Obama.

By Francine Kiefer | Christian Science Monitor – 17 hrs ago

House Republicans claim President Obama is not doing enough to enforce the laws Congress has passed, and today and tomorrow, they intend to do something about it.

On Wednesday, they passed a bill that gives each chamber of Congress standing to sue the White House over failure to enforce federal laws, with five Democrats joining all Republicans in a 233-to-181 vote. On Thursday, they will take up a bill that would require the Justice Department to inform Congress when the White House is not going to enforce a particular law, and to explain why.

As a practical matter, the bills will never become law. Neither will get past the Democrat-controlled Senate. But they involve a serious claim against a president: that the person constitutionally charged to “take care that the laws be faithfully executed” is, by implication, a law-breaker. It is also a congressional complaint not unique to this president and begs the questions: Well, is he an enforcement slacker compared with other presidents?

The complaint against Mr. Obama involves “Congress and their belief in the sacrosanct nature of the law, and the president saying there’s a lot of latitude that he has a right to exercise,” says Ross Baker, a congressional expert at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J.

The most often raised criticisms about Obama and the law are:

  •  He is applying the Affordable Care Act willy-nilly – instituting a series of delays and other changes in the way the law works.
  • He is not adequately enforcing deportations in the interior regions of the country, and, more importantly, that he’s segmenting off a special portion of the population – children of illegal immigrants – for delayed deportation
  • He is not consistently enforcing federal marijuana laws.
  • He refused to legally defend the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) earlier in his presidency.

Obama rejected DOMA, which disadvantaged homosexual unions, on constitutional grounds. His administration followed the proper procedure by notifying Congress of its constitutional objection. Indeed, the Supreme Court ruled the key provision of the act unconstitutional in 2013.

The implementation of Obamacare and drug laws may be vexing and cause confusion, but, says Louis Fisher, an expert on the separation of powers, “the idea that a statute can actually control every part of implementation is very unrealistic. Statutes are pretty general.”

His concern is with Obama’s special exception for the deportation of children of illegal immigrants. “That’s making law by yourself. That’s disturbing.”He judges Obama to be “sort of in the middle” of presidents who buck congressional authority. Some presidential scholars name Richard Nixon as the most egregious nose-thumber in recent history of laws passed by Congress. In 1972, he vetoed the Clean Water Act, and when Congress overrode his veto, he refused to spend all of the money allocated for it, impounding half of it. The issue eventually got to the Supreme Court, and in Train v. City of New York (1975), the court ruled that the president had “no authority” to withhold funds, and that he “cannot frustrate the will of Congress by killing a program through impoundment.”

Many presidents, however, had used impoundment previously.Another way presidents have registered their displeasure with laws is through “signing statements.” These statements, issued at the signing of legislation, reflect a president’s views of the bill, and, in many cases, his complaint about it – a signal that it won’t be a priority or will be ignored. Since President Reagan, Bill Clinton has issued the most signing statements, but George W. Bush – by far – issued the greatest percentage that contained some type of challenge or objection.

President Bush used signing statements “in an aggressive way to imply that he might not faithfully execute more than 1,000 provisions of statutes,” writes James Pfiffner, a professor and presidential expert at George Mason University in Arlington, Va. A famous case: that Bush might not execute Sen. John McCain’s amendment outlawing torture that was attached to a defense authorization bill in 2005.

Of course, politics play a role in the GOP complaints coming to a head this week. Republicans criticize the president for not implementing Obamacare, yet they want to repeal it. And they point to the president’s lack of enforcement of immigration laws as reason not to trust him on immigration reform, even though many support the concept behind his delayed deportations – the so-called DREAM Act.

It’s “an excuse” to not pass reform this year, says Stephen Wayne, a presidential expert at Georgetown University.

Even if a bill giving both chambers standing to sue the White House became law, says Mr. Fisher, most courts wouldn’t take the case. Congress already has the tools to work out its power disputes with the president: hearings, legislation, subpoenas, the purse – and in worst cases, impeachment. A court would simply say, “You’ve got remedies of your own. Don’t bother us.”

Information below is from Blue Cross of Illinois site and explains what the Affordable Care Act and minimum coverage is: notice that “Obamacare” is not used at all. This is one of the best and shortest explanations I have seen. It is surely a win for insurance companies and surprisingly most Americans (even some members of Congress).

Affordable Care Act: Minimum Essential Coverage

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is bringing many changes to health insurance in 2014. One of the biggest changes took effect Jan. 1. Now most United States citizens must have a minimum level of health care coverage or face a tax penalty. This is known as minimum essential coverage.

What Is Minimum Essential Coverage?                                  Types of minimum essential coverage plans include:

  • Employer-sponsored health insurance (including COBRA and retiree coverage)
  • Individual health insurance coverage
  • Medicare
  • Medicaid
  • Children’s Health Insurance Program (CHIP)
  • Certain types of veterans’ health care
  • TRICARE

How Do I Know if I Have Minimum Essential Coverage?                                  Most people who have employer coverage or the other types of insurance listed above meet the requirement. If you have health insurance through your employer and aren’t sure your coverage meets the requirement, you can check with your benefits manager.

What if I Know Someone Who Doesn’t Have Minimum Essential Coverage?                                  You may have friends or family who do not have insurance that meets the minimum essential coverage requirement. It is important to know that most people who do not have qualified coverage by March 31, 2014, will pay a tax penalty.

This is true for everyone except those who are part of an exempt group. Exempt groups include people who do not have to have coverage because they meet certain qualifications. Some examples of these qualifications include:

  • Financial hardship
  • Religious beliefs
  • Incarceration
  • Those who have special coverage established by another law, such as American Indians

Still Have Questions?                                  Visit ReformandYouIL.com for more information. If you have friends or family members who don’t have health care coverage, they can go online to ReformandYouIL.com to apply for Get Covered Illinois coverage. They can also apply for coverage by phone at 800-538-8833 or by mail with a paper application.

The information provided here is only a brief summary of one of the provisions of the law. It is not intended to be a complete, detailed description of the law or a legal opinion on the law.
