Tag Archives: As I see It

I have had several younger people whose image of aging is  different to say the least. I have been told that I need to just relax and enjoy life. Lets examine what enjoying life is, enjoying life is or should be a lifetime pursuit (no matter how long that life is). When a person has spent 25 to 40 years working and decides to retire, there has to be something to fill that gap. many of us do not have hobbies but acquire one (or more). With any amount of hobby time there still needs to be something else, I equate the lessening of activity to when your computer goes to “sleep”, it is then in a low power state. Your body goes into a low power state when you lay down to sleep but upon waking, your body almost immediately is in gear to move on. Upon retirement when one decides or elects to ease off some physical activities , the body begins to slow down and underachieve in many areas. What a person  needs to do is continue as high a level of activity as possible and including mental and physical exertions. The Body is like an automobile, you need fuel (food), you need to have movement so that the moving pasts remain flexible and you need to have a periodic check up (physical). The main thing to stress is activity to keep even the ache prone parts  flexible. A little weight lifting is a good way to work out and keep the muscles toned. There is no need to go on a weight regimen like a power lifter but some moderate weight exercise is helpful. If you have no hobbies, then get one with physical activity and do crossword puzzles or some sort of mental exercise. All of this will enhance and possibly extend your life.

The ongoing rants and rages about “gun control” is more about personal freedom than controlling firearms. NO ONE has said guns will be taken away except the some of the pro gun rights folks (NRA et al.) What has been said is there needs to be more or better checks on the purchase of firearms by extension the legality of the purchasers to own or buy those firearms. The Congressional Dupublicans are more concerned about staying in office (as usual) than actually doing some real work. If the constituency that are gun owners are able to hold the Congress hostage against the will of the majority then we will continue to be in trouble. I repeat NO One has suggested taking of guns from anyone, all that has been said is we need better ways to insure folks who cannot or should not legally possess or purchase firearms are prevented from doing so. This issue has brought out the worst in many of us and primarily along Racial lines in some cases. These vocal but limited few are the people who do not see the big picture and what is required to make ALL of us safe. These are the same people who do not understand that as people (world wide) we all need to stop knee jerking our way to oblivion based on innuendo, speculation and incomplete information

Medicaid Funds for the Taking

Abel Oldsworth, my reticent friend, and I discussed the benefits and risks in going with the expansion of Medicaid through generous federal funds that would provide health care and health maintenance assistance to several hundred Michigan low income individuals and families.  Beneficiaries would not have to use emergency rooms for their primary care, and they would not have to wait until they have multiple problems before seeking care. Further, businesses would welcome this expansion because it grows consumer purchasing. We do not understand the reasons for delayed action and came to this conclusion.

Some state legislators think Medicaid expansion regretful

Although saving money and lives might be beneficial.

But it’s the poor folks’ defects

Which outweigh their spending effects

And thus warrant the denials as providential.

A brief reading of the many articles on the Bible, especially Leviticus (which are the words of Moses et al, who were all of the Hebrew Levi Tribe). Many of the writings  were rife with adherents to practices or avoidance of actions and activities supposedly forbidden by God. In reading these banned items are references to practices by other cultures such as styles  of haircuts. tattoos, etc. These practices while forbidden by the Hebrew bible at that time were no more than rules to govern them selves and their interaction with other groups of non Jewish people. These Non Jews have similar restrictions as to dress, appearance and actions related to many of the Jewish restrictions that have survived the ages to come down to us as “Gospel”. Biblical scholars interpret and reinterpret the Old and new testament have not and do not always get the real meaning correct. These literal interpretations have been the catalyst to create more religious sects and subsequent interpretations. This leaves us today with a multitude  mini sects and interpretations which in the long run loses and limits the human quality of living along side one another. In essence the “word” has separated us more than tie us together.

Think about it.

In my life’s trek, I have met many people who have opinions ands are opinionated. For clarity: an opinion is a belief based on what seems to be true or probable but not certainty.. Being Opinionated is an obstinately held belief regardless of truth or reality. I believe (opine) that many of  us younger than 40 years old cannot afford to be opinionated as they have not had enough life experience to earn it. Now with that in mind, there are many older people who do not qualify to be opinionated because they  while having life experience cannot or will not accept any new information that would change their opinion. Being human uniquely qualifies all of us to form and gather opinions but still retain the ability to alter that opinion as information becomes available, its called learning. So when we opine about religion, race, sex or politics there needs to be room for change in that opinion or we miss some of the fine points on the many subjects that appear before us in print or on the airwaves. This narrow focus is why we have the ineffectual Congress in modern times (past 30 years or so). Our Congress has offered and altered (when possible) opinions on important  issues to the point of confusion on what the issues really are. So to opine is great but leave the door open for change.

The ongoing buzz and debate on what is called “gun control” will be just that if the media debate continues. Everyone involved has spent too much time sound biting and, tweeting and using other social media to advance their opinions yet no one has a specific definitive answer. The biggies in the firearm debate have proposed publicly several ways to curtail or stop violence committed with firearms but none are perfect or acceptable to all. I propose that some or all of the most vocal participants have a sit down like adults should, put the real issues on the table and create a solution. The past 20 years have seen more Media debate on major and minor issues than good or just  reasonable  answers to resolve the issues. There is never a 100% solution to anything but there is always a reasonable one but many times  we have settled for one-sided, partial or temporary  solution. In the case of the current Firearms issue we have the ever present sense of firearms owners not wanting give them up or be constrained by any more laws on purchase or use. We have the lobbyists who advocate the same and asking for rescinding existing restrictions, both factions have taken hard lines on any additional restrictions but losing sight of the need for something that would allow the ownership and oversight of firearms to prevent the illegal ownership and use of firearms. The illegal use is more than just the recent mass shootings of people, it is the killing of wildlife that is protected or monitored. My opinion is: the public, media and involved parties need to meet , putting all of the vitriol aside examine the situation and decide on what could work. Without a consensus on this, the debate will go on forever creating a split that will only widen and continue to be debated with no good end.

Hey guys,

A couple of days ago a storm came through here that was crazy. I’ve never seen that much hail and rain.  It reminded me of when I was living in my old house. Every time there was a bad storm I had to go through some major things to get the lights back on in the house. One time there was a storm so bad that lightning hit the house and all the power went out. I looked across the street and my neighbor had power, so I knew the problem was just in my house.
Stay with me, I’m going somewhere here…
I knew I had to get to the circuit breaker to fix what was going on. Now, in my old house, the breaker box was in the attic, and in order to get to it I had to climb a ladder, go up a flight of stairs and then climb over an air conditioning unit, all the while trying to not step through the ceiling joist or I would go straight through the sheet rock. And imagine trying to do all of this in the dark. But I had to do it if I wanted lights on in my house.
I got to the breaker box and started turning the breakers back on. For those of you who are not up on your DIY (do it yourself, LOL), the circuit breakers protect the house from further damage by turning themselves off if they get too much power or pull too much power to them.
As I was thinking about this yesterday I started thinking about us as people, as souls… me, you and any other human on this planet. What is common about us all is that we all, at one time or another, will go through or have been through a storm, and sometimes the storms are so bad that they turn off circuit breakers in our lives. We can look at others who have gone through the same storm and they are fine, like my neighbor across the street. They had power, but I was in the dark. Same storm, but it affected me differently. Many people can have the same experience and get over it but it affects each of us differently. Never let someone tell you to just get over it because they did. It’s not that simple.
When circuit breakers shut down in our lives they usually turn off to protect us from trauma, but just because they turn off doesn’t mean that they are supposed to stay off. A lot of times we leave them off because we don’t want to do all that is necessary to reach the breaker box to turn them back on. So what happens? We begin to live a life that is not as bright and fulfilling as it was originally designed to be. You just stay in the dark because it’s easier to not go through what you need to go through for healing. Trust me, I’ve been there, lived there for a while until I realized that I wanted all the lights on in my soul. I had to get these breakers back on.
Why am I saying this to you? Well I know that God designed all of us to live the fullest life that we can, to live in the light, love and joy. It is my hope and prayer today that you will start to do the work to turn on some of the breakers that may have been turned off in your life by difficult moments. What do I mean by that? If you have a dream and you stopped dreaming because it got too hard, that’s a breaker that went off. Turn it back on. If you decided that you wouldn’t love anyone else because you’ve been hurt, that’s a breaker that’s been turned off. Turn it back on. If you have decided to give up on life because nothing seems to go right, that’s a breaker that went off. Turn it back on. If you have given up on your kids because they won’t do the right thing, that’s a breaker that went off. Turn it back on.
You see what I mean? Go through your life and look at all the people who have hurt you. Look at all the situations that have left you in the dark. Turn those breakers back on. Live in a full house. One of my favorite scriptures says, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father, which is in heaven.”  Light up your soul!

Franklin Roosevelt said “we have nothing to fear but fear itself”, This is not the entire quote and it’s related content but unfortunately we do have something to fear. What we have to be completely fearful of are the firmly entrenched 535 members of Congress who by their stubborn adherence to political malfeasance in the guise of Legislating have put us in a war we could not hope to win, an economic morass that we cannot hope to get out of without some tough choices. All the while they have protected their wages, pensions and health care. This unfortunately is not an isolated case, we have the same events occurring in every state and many communities. The people we voted in office have failed to do anything related to problem solving but still draw the salaries and benefits they so richly do not deserve. We as voters have allowed our legislators and public administrators to do what we were led to believe was correct and prudent. It is apparent to me that our faith in the government as a whole is a mistake. Our needs are for elected officials who will do the work required for what we as voters consider correct pay and benefits not what they surreptitiously give themselves. When we (their bosses) decide we have has enough then we will begin to un elect these losers so we can win for a change.

In the course of past several days I have heard the following: the first black Republican President, this is after the apparent disconnect of the Dupublican party with the majority of the country over the past 2 presidential elections. When will the political parties understand that dividing the populace into segments has no modern day value or relativity? The milestones in America have been accented by the first, Black man, the first Back woman, the first Woman, the first Jewish person, the first Catholic or the first person of any gender, Race  and  religious persuasion. The political process has accented these issues to point of exacerbating situations that are of no real importance to most Americans. What we all want, desire and so desperately need is an end to media exploitation of the differences among Americans as news or entertainment. Imagine if the elected officials we currently have really paid attention to ALL of their constituents as they purport to, we would (I venture to say) have a better economy is spite of the problems that exist. Under the guise of protecting us these elected tacit hate mongers have created rifts where there were none and those rifts are propagated by people who are too young and inexperienced to realize where this nation came from. One could read the Constitution from end to end and still not have a complete picture of what we are about but our Congress assumes that ability by the so called power of the Office and the Oath they took upon assuming the duties of that office. The power they have is from the people and not the mantle of office. We the  people give that power by virtue of our votes and donations so it is within our power to remove them for cause by the power of the same vote. If as voters we stop picketing start voting away from party lines , we will see the fruits of those labors quicker than a picket line. Remember many big spenders support groups that benefits them not necessarily All  Americans.
