The ongoing and seemingly interminable litany of rants from the Resident coupled with the semi competent issuance from Senate leader Hitch McConnell take attention from the upcoming mid-term elections. For some reason Hitch emerges occasionally to push for action in as short a period as possible which either pressures members or causes bad legislation to be enacted. All the while no comments on the current Oval office occupier’s actions as there were during the previous administration. These asides do no more than confuse and befuddle the real issues. The real issue is we have an incompetent leader who is all but uncontrollable even with saner people giving him information and updates. It appears that this administration is headed by a determined person who has to have the spotlight and issues absurdities slightly bathed in an aura of truth. There is no real direction beyond his underlings saying what is required to stay under his radar as he governs by way of entertainment news. If we add the incompetency of Congress due to their ever shifting hidden agendas, we have the makings of a perfect storm of ineptitude with no recovery path except for the potential of mid-term elections. The wider world is looking at us in awe and amazement as we have clearly signaled our inability to act as the world leader we once were. In abdicating that leadership our tacit enemies have filled the vacuum leaving us with narrow avenues that we have to travel as a solo act which could do us harm for years and possibly centuries. This crawl to the bottom is faster than most of us realize and we need to wake up!

Campaign promises are usually just (promises) that since most people who run for office cannot most times fulfill  these promises without a full understanding of what the long and short-range effects will be. The current Oval Office Resident is leading by adoration, He is no more than a panderer of misinformation, this misinformation gets him cheers and applause but it is a cover for his ineptitude. A trade war with China will trickle down to American farmers and exporters of goods. The tax reform  will not definitely result in more jobs even though there are some wage increases (average about 10%). This demand for a Border wall and more security is based on a campaign promise, not facts. The so called stream of immigrants is into Mexico and that country has that situation under control. The so called  economy boom is the result of actions taken before his election and rather than ride that wave, he is attempting to take credit for it while creating trade issues that will affect our European partners as well as our local businesses. The issues are actually non issues but this Resident has to have chaos to cover his lack of knowledge about the job and its effect on the US and our partners. A wiser man would gather folks who actually know what is happening in the world and act accordingly rather than people who have their own agenda and coincidentally does his bidding. The current media that touts itself as Conservative is rife with provocateurs as opposed to Journalists who report based on facts no matter what their personal beliefs are. This explosion of “isms” and adherence to specific labels is for the most part no more than covert Racism. It has been my experience that Anyone who states” they not biased about someone or something “is usually not telling the truth. We as people are not Saints so having biases is no true sin but denial of that bias to gain an advantage is. This is a major part of the “Campaign promise”. This is apparently a major part of the biased media, no matter which side they fall on. One main factor of our current political system is the ability to offer an idea (true or not) and have it go viral before its disproved or proved, once it is viral it nearly impossible to change due to the inherent or learned biases we All have. Contrary to popular belief the swamp is still in existence and as wet as ever. The true swamp is the long serving Congress who many of us have allowed to serve in spite of their failings as shown under this administration and the previous one. The remedy for this poor Governance is simple-Voting! If each one of us made the attempt to set aside our biases and looked closely at the candidate’s past and present actions we may find that they have not been doing us any great services. Two examples of the people we have voted for prior to their service in the current administration: Scott Pruitt and Tom Price. I firmly believe that the hope that we would get better leadership has not been in vain, we just needed to have the light shown on the long time servants of themselves by the advent of TOTUS.

Thoughts: White Evangelicals who supported Donald Trump are as busy now as they were during the Salem Witch trials. Their purpose appears to be  making American in their image in spite of the Constitution allowing “freedom” of religion. It can be argued that what they are doing is just that. Looking at what they are for does not seem to support that. They are anti abortion period and like the NRA put their message out as the righteous  one. It appears that they have not considered that children born out of incest, rape and just the plain ignorance of youth can and has lead to abandonment by the parents, murder by the parents or if the baby is kept, a potential lifetime of abuse that carries forth as that child matures. These are some of the same people who complain about people who are receiving aid of some sort through Government programs. This does not appear to be very Christian to me especially since some of these same folks possibly had relatives who opposed integration and stood by during the lynching and murders of Black folk. It may be just me but how can one trust people who want what they want in the name of Jesus? To add more to this we have a person who took the oath of Office to uphold the Constitution which encompasses all of us and demands protection for us ALL not just some us who have specific agendas and supports his ever-changing dicta and capricious utterances. This makes me think that he possibly took the “Oaf” of Office rather than the Oath of Office. We have reached a time when people have forgotten what America is really about. It is about ALL of us not some of us , when we ignore these groups who have specific goals that exclude others then we have a problem. We should remember that what effects one group affects us all sooner or later.

In the ongoing saga of  Administrative mismanagement, chaos and Congressional malfeasance anything that occurs in this current administration should be of no surprise to anyone who is paying attention. The supporters of this Resident will probably not see the light until  they are blinded by the long range effects. The recent tariff’s while not immediately, will affect many products  we send overseas and now China (one of our biggest trading partners) is imposing tariffs, if China decides to enforce more tariffs on items like Soybeans or automobiles, those 2 items would have a severe effect on many of TOTUS’ supporters. This Tariff issue is more about intellectual properties than physical issues and there are many. The installation of a vindictive child as Leader will over time push us ALL back 2 decades and alienate our allies. The rush to get things done with no apparent discussion is the wrong way to Govern. We already have an inept Congress lead by two self servers, adding a self aggrandizing child has only exacerbated our declining position on the world stage. There appears to be no understanding of how diplomacy  works or  what diplomacy is, yet policy is made and enacted much like a fleeting thought. Looking at the ongoing tweet storm method of Governing, we have a poor Tax reform enacted that on the face looks great but underneath the dirty end of the stick still falls to the mid to lower income Americans. Just because companies have given pay increases or bonuses to employees does not mean a boon to those employees and their families. More taxes will have to be paid on these increases and bonuses, the larger deduction will not offset these taxes. Larger deductions do not directly offset pay increases, there is only a percentage advantage. The Corporate tax cuts allow for the wage increases and bonuses but at the same time allows the investors and share holders to gain (how many low to middle income taxpayers own stock?). In the long run these tax cuts, tariffs and other executive orders will bite the low to middle class tax payers in many more ways that we never think of. For instance: The TOTUS has through his actions allowed for EPA regulations that protect our air and water but benefit the main polluters (our vehicles and certain industries), These actions do not produce any new jobs but have the capacity to cause and aggravate more illnesses for many of us. There is no upside for this Administration and the slide downward is getting slicker. To be clear we collectively do not have very good Congressional representation or Top down leadership and that falls on our shoulders because we as voters do not or will not investigate the people we vote for. The political ads are no more than buzzwords and soundbites that sound good enough to get someone elected but once in office, they do what is best for them and their party while our needs became tertiary or lower. This is again a call for all voters to forgo the entertainment value of our current administration and see behind the curtain. All of the actions of  “TOTUS” is for his edification and pursuit of adoration as evidenced by the ongoing campaign style meetings. Being adored is not the role of the Leader of our country, it is a thankless job if done as correct as possible and we see this administration tumbling into an abyss that will take many years to get out of and only if have the courage to make changes in our lackluster Congress along with electing a Leader (no matter which party) who is not Jar Jar Binks!

Explain to me how can a program work when it is restricted as the Current administration has restricted the ACA (aka Obamacare). This program which benefitted many more people than the GOP wants you to believe has been under attack since it’s inception. The current administration has derided it as a failure but not telling the whole truth. Campaign rhetoric and promises that harm the public are as criminal as bodily harm. The administration will point to this decrease as a victory but ask the people who are affected by the loss or decrease of health care. If you are affected by these changes then you need to step up and engage in getting people elected who will do what good for you. MA.

CMS’s Verma says 11.8 million signed up for 2018 Obamacare exchange plans
(Reuters) – About 11.8 million consumers nationwide enrolled in 2018 Obamacare exchange plans, a 3 percent drop from last year when 12.2 million consumers signed up, according to a final government tally released on Tuesday by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services.
The tally includes both sign-ups on the exchange run by the federal government for 39 states, which was released on a provisional basis late in 2017, and on the 12 other exchanges run by Washington, D.C. and the remaining states.
CMS said the average premium before tax credits in 2018 is $621 a month, an increase of more than 30 percent from last year.
However, those receiving tax credits – around 83 percent of consumers on Obamacare – will pay around $89 a month on average in premiums, the agency said. That is down 16 percent from $106 a month last year.
Private insurers sell strictly regulated individual insurance plans through the Obamacare online exchanges that the government subsidizes based on a person’s income.
U.S. President Donald Trump in October cut off billions of dollars in subsidy payments to insurers that help people pay for medical costs, causing insurers to raise 2018 premiums or drop out of selling plans in the Obamacare marketplace.
His administration also halved the enrollment period to six weeks and cut the federal advertising and outreach budget by 90 percent. It also has proposed putting cheaper insurance policies offering bare-bones medical coverage on the Obamacare market in 2019 or 2020.

President Donald Trump pitched his steel tariffs as a way to save U.S. steel jobs, saying it was a move designed to urge “all companies to buy American.”
However, some small businesses, like LOOK Trailers in Indiana, are feeling the heat from Trump’s trade move.

“LOOK’s president, Matt Arnold, said the company has seen steel prices increase 25 percent and aluminum as high as 35 percent. He told CNBC that he’s afraid his suppliers’ prices have even further to run in the months ahead.
Although the company already uses 75 percent U.S. steel and aluminum, now its competitors are also moving from foreign to domestic steel. That’s driving up the demand for steel producers domestically and adding costs to businesses’ bottom lines.
Arnold said that the company has managed to honor fixed prices on committed orders, but that means they’ve been “getting hit and absorbing price increases and then pricing out three months.”
He said the net effect has been the same on the whole industry in this area.
“Whether you’re public or private the hit has been to your bottom line,” Arnold said.
Trump has said he hopes shuttered steel mills will reopen and add new life into the American steel industry. But that process could take more than year, if not longer, leaving some businesses without enough U.S.-made steel and aluminum.
Arnold said another factor affecting his business is rising wages because of a tightening labor market.
“It’s a battle every day. It’s how to get more out per man hour. While battling rising wages, competitive workforce, and now you add the third one, which is rising raw materials. You have to be right today. There’s no margin for error,” he said.
The average cost of a trailer from LOOK is about $3500, which is already a 9 percent jump from 2017.
The last time the U.S. slapped major tariffs on steel imports, under President George W. Bush in 2002, companies like LOOK Trailers experienced a 10 to 15 percent hike in prices and a drop in sales. Businesses are hoping this time will be different.”

How a small town lawyer pulled off the biggest Social Security scam in U.S. history and why it could happen again

The bigger the pool of taxpayer money, the bigger the magnet it is for fraudsters. And there is not much that is bigger than the $2.8 trillion Social Security trust fund. But even by those standards, the $550 million fraud pulled off by Kentucky attorney Eric C. Conn — the largest Social Security fraud in history — is mind-boggling.
“Conn had a brilliant business design,” said attorney Ned Pillersdorf, who is working with Conn’s victims, in an interview with CNBC’s “American Greed.” “Set up shop, do a lot of advertising in an area where we have a lot of people who are truly disabled. Bribe the judge, a corrupt judge. He made millions.”
Disability insurance is a key feature of the Social Security system. People who have worked and paid into the system long enough can receive benefits. But under strict federal rules, they must show that their disability prevents them from working in any capacity and is expected to last at least one year.
Operating in Kentucky coal country — where thousands of jobs have been lost, and many people rely on disability payments to get by — Conn advertised himself as “Mr. Social Security.” On billboards and in commercials that saturated the local airwaves, he promised he could win disability payments that people could not secure on their own.
Conn seemed to have the track record to prove it. Under federal rules, disability lawyers collect a percentage of the claims that they win, up to $6,000 per case. By 2010, Conn was the third-highest-paid disability lawyer in the country, collecting $3.9 million from the Social Security Administration that year alone.
What Conn was not telling clients — or the Social Security Administration — was that his purported 99 percent success rate was the result of hundreds of thousands of dollars in illegal payments to Social Security Administrative Law Judge David Daugherty, who essentially rubber-stamped the claims. When the scam finally came to light, Social Security suspended disability payments to some 1,700 recipients, leaving many in desperate straits.
Widespread damage
Leroy Burchett was a former printing press crewman and delivery truck driver plagued with debilitating pain after two spinal surgeries. He had gone to Conn as a last-ditch effort, according to his wife, Emma. When Leroy got word in 2015 that his disability payments would be cut off as a result of Conn’s fraud, Emma says the pressure was too much to bear.
“So my husband’s just in complete panic, because, you know, everything’s gone,” she told “American Greed.” “He said, ‘I don’t know what I’m gonna do. I just, what are we gonna do?'”
Within days, the panic would take a dark turn.
“He got up that morning, and it was like he was a totally different person,” Emma Burchett recalled. “He came through the house yelling and cussing at me and cussing at the kids. He was throwing things, and kicking things. He was just crazy. I opened the door and he was sitting on the edge of the bed with a gun. I took that gun away from him. And he said the same words to me again. He said, ‘You’re not going to stop this. Nothing can fix this.’ He stormed back outside. And my kids were standing right there. And he said, ‘I just can’t take this.’ And he pulled another gun out from behind his back, and he shot himself in the chin.”
Conn eventually pleaded guilty last year to a two-count federal complaint of stealing from the government and paying illegal gratuities. But he fled while awaiting sentencing and was sentenced in absentia to 12 years in prison. Finally captured in Honduras in December, Conn is being held without bond pending additional charges related to his escape, to which he has pleaded not guilty. And federal prosecutors, claiming Conn violated his plea agreement, are seeking to try him on an 18-count criminal indictment — including conspiracy, fraud, money laundering and destroying evidence — which Conn has moved to dismiss.
Daugherty, who admitted accepting $609,000 in bribes, pleaded guilty to two felony counts and is serving a four-year prison sentence.
But for hundreds of Conn’s clients, the nightmare endures. Pillersdorf is part of a team of attorneys trying to help. He posts regular updates on his Facebook page.
“One of the main reasons I do this has been really No. 1 suicide prevention, No. 2 to let these people know what’s going on, and to let people know they’re not being abandoned,” he said.
Shoring up the system
Meanwhile, the Social Security Administration and the government watchdog agency that oversees it are trying to make certain that nothing like this happens again.
“It’s very helpful when we have these large-scale cases,” said John Grasso, special agent In charge at the Social Security Administration’s Office of Inspector General’s New York field office. “It often does lead to changes.”
He said Social Security has stiffened penalties for disability fraud, particularly for what he called “facilitators,” including doctors, lawyers, and third-party representatives.
The agency is also working more closely with other government agencies — including law enforcement — to analyze claims data that signals potential fraud. In 2015, Congress increased funding for a program known as Cooperative Disability Investigation, enough to put CDI teams in every state.
Grasso said those tools are already bearing fruit. His office helped bust a ring of New York City police and firefighters collecting fraudulent payments for mental disabilities, as well as a disability scam in Puerto Rico involving dozens of doctors.
Still, Grasso is appealing to the public for help. He urges people applying for disability payments to beware of third parties such as attorneys and claim representatives who make grandiose promises. Social Security has strict rules about how those representatives are compensated, so be wary of any requests for payment upfront, and make certain payments are kept in escrow pending the outcome of the claim.
If you suspect fraud, contact the inspector general’s toll-free hotline at 1-800-269-0271.
Despite all of that, Grasso says he is “very confident” that people will continue trying to defraud the system, possibly on the scale of Conn.
“I think it’s American greed. That’s exactly what it is,” he said. “If the opportunity is there, people are going to take that opportunity, and until you put that wall up and you show that there’s consequences for it, people are going to continue to do it.”
Go inside Eric Conn’s massive con, and see how he almost got away with it, on an all new episode of CNBC’s “American Greed,” Monday, April 2, at 10 p.m. ET/PT only on CNBC.

Black Lungs Cold Hearts
A new Kentucky law will make it harder for coal miners with black lung to get compensation
5:36 a.m. ET

Much of the drama in Kentucky’s legislature last week was around Senate Bill 151, an unexpected and fast-moving bill that Republicans pushed through to end pensions for new teachers, replacing the defined benefits with a 401(k) style system. But Kentucky Gov. Matt Bevin (R) also signed House Bill 2, which overhauls workers compensation in the state in a way that will make it harder for coal miners with black lung to get state benefits. The law allows only federally certified pulmonologists, not radiologists, to determine if X-rays show black lung.
The problem for coal minders, NPR reports, is that Kentucky has only six federally certified pulmonologists, “four of them routinely are hired by coal companies or their insurers” and one is semi-retired and losing his federal National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) certification June 1, leaving just one doctor who generally works for coal miners rather than coal companies. The law excludes radiologist Dr. Brandon Crum, for example, who helped uncover one of the biggest clusters of complicated black lung ever documented. NPR’s survey of Appalachia has counted more than 2,200 advanced black lung diagnoses since 2010.
“It is curious to me that the legislators feel that the pulmonologist is more qualified to interpret a chest radiograph than a radiologist is,” Dr. Kathleen DePonte told NPR. “This is primarily what radiologists do.” The lawmaker who sponsored the change, state Rep. Adam Koenig (R), said he was motivated by the disparity between pulmonologists, who tend to be conservative in their black lung diagnoses, and radiologists, who tend to diagnose the fatal disease more liberally. He told NPR that he “relied on the expertise of those who understand the issue — the industry, coal companies and attorneys,” adding, “All we’re doing is making sure that qualified doctors are making these determinations.” You can listen to NPR’s report from Sunday’s Weekend Edition online.
